Good Food School Market

Nourishing teens and fostering community

standard header
Food for school communities in middle and high schools

Because of the Good Food School Market (GFSM), more teens are getting the wholesome foods they need to create strong futures.

One in 11 children in the Blue Ridge service area lives with hunger. Through school breakfasts and lunches, many children can get food assistance during the school day. But stigma can prevent participation for teens in backpack programs; they often don’t want other students to know they are in need.

By partnering with schools, the Food Bank is supporting school communities to reimagine what food assistance for teens looks like.  GFSM provides free food, including fresh produce, at middle and high school pantries, designed to support the unique needs of each school and run by school staff and students.

Schools order and distribute food that works best for their school community. Helping to dismantle stigma around food assistance, all are welcome at the GFSM.

Student leaders organize peer outreach to make the market a stigma-free space. All are welcome at the GFSM.
